Bongeziwe Mabandla est un auteur-compositeur-interprète sud-africain reconnu comme l’une des voix les plus singulières de la scène Black Alternative. Il a publié quatre albums salués par la critique : Umlilo (2012), Mangaliso (2017), iimini (2020) et amaXesha (2023), tous réalisés en collaboration avec le producteur Tiago Correia-Paulo.
Né dans l’Eastern Cape, Mabandla grandit à Tsolo avant de s’installer à Johannesburg où il étudie le théâtre. Son travail musical se distingue par un dialogue fin entre folk xhosa, soul et électronique, porté par une écriture intime et une grande attention au timbre et à la narration.
Il remporte à deux reprises le South African Music Award du Meilleur album alternatif, en 2018 (Mangaliso) et en 2021 (iimini). iimini figure parmi les meilleurs albums de l’année 2020 pour American Songwriter et contribue à installer durablement Mabandla sur la scène internationale, avec des sélections et diffusions par NPR, Billboard et COLORSxSTUDIOS.
Son quatrième album, amaXesha, désigné Global Album of the Month par The Guardian en 2023, marque une étape importante dans son parcours, affirmant un langage musical personnel où traditions, expérimentations et production contemporaine coexistent avec évidence.
Sur scène, Bongeziwe Mabandla est réputé pour l’intensité et la précision de ses performances. Il se produit régulièrement en Afrique du Sud et à l’international, dans des salles et festivals en Europe, en Afrique et en Amérique latine (Reeperbahn, WOMEX, Oslo World, Afrovibes, Lake of Stars). En parallèle de la musique, il développe un travail dans le cinéma et les arts visuels, notamment avec sa participation au film Augure de Baloji (2022).

He performs regularly in South Africa and internationally, at venues and festivals in Europe, Africa and Latin America (Reeperbahn, WOMEX, Oslo World, Afrovibes, Lake of Stars). Alongside his music, he is developing his work in film and visual arts, notably with his participation in Baloji’s film Augure (2022).
